No. 4. A fourth reason people don’t get to “know yourself.”

People resist learning about themselves.
They think it takes too long.

They’re thinking maybe in terms of going to Mars in a space ship.

 KNOW YOURSELF
Well, in truth, it takes the rest of your life because we humans are much more complicated than computers.
Or spaceships.
But it won’t take UP your life. Even though, in truth, you will learn about yourself for the entire rest of your life.
But int doesn’t mean it takes up hours a day!
It means you are alert to yourself in the world, you monitor that relationship and you learn from it, start making adjustments and decisions based on the new incoming information.
You learn something new every day, incrementally, almost by osmosis (once you know what to look for and how to look for it.)

I’ll give six reasons in this little series on the topic, Why People don’t know themselves.

Maybe you have said some of these to yourself.

Here’s the first reason:

“Only great, learned, wise people can do it “

This comes down to, “I’m not smart enough to do it.”

Or, I’m not good enough.
Or, I’m not educated enough.
We know that philosophers, poets, some writers, theologians, learned people, wise men and women can do it but that’s not me.

Know Yourself: But I’m not good enough.

This argument says: Only great people are capable of understanding themselves, going inside to learn more about themselves and relating it to the world around them.
That’s not true either.
Anybody can do it!

I’m not smart enough to know myself.

They think self-knowledge is only for people with PhDs or gurus who sit on mountain tops in India diapers. Well, think about ratcheting that knowledge up about a thousand times and you start to really know yourself and see your great potential when you discover the real, authentic you!

SELF-KNOWLEDGE IS “TOO HARD.”

Is self-knowledge too hard?

They think it’s too hard.
It’s not.

A third reason people don’t take what they think is the trouble to know themselves is exactly that!
They think is it is going to be too hard and too much trouble.

It’s too difficult, they’ll have to learn a lot of mumbo-jumbo, or psychology, or philosophy, or self-development-speak, and then they’ll throw up; and anyway, they are busy and have too much on their plate as it is.

None of that is accurate.  (Well, OK, the busy part is true!) But this will focus your business!)

Yes, it takes work but it is also exciting because it focuses on the most important person on the planet—YOU!

Not in a selfish way, but in a positive, truthful, freeing manner.

Look at it this way.

We live 20-90 years and then we die.
The more we know about ourselves the better we will live, the better our choices will be about education, people, lovers, jobs, careers, time management and hundred other things.

Yes, we have to learn a process, but the great thing is, the actual learning about ourselves occurs all the time.  Every day in everything we do.

The difference is we know what to pay attention to now.

Once we know what to look for we see things about ourselves every day.
By osmosis.

Then, as that happens–unconsciously– we start to notice the results, the new information we are getting and we get get turned on to the process and are stimulated to know more and read more and think more and feel more…because it is about us-or in this case, about you!

The second reason people don’t know themselves: They think. It’s too “airy-fairy!”

If you don’t know yourself you make two serious errors in your life.

  • You go into the wrong right kind of work–for you.
  • You don’t marry the right person.

Then  you won’t be happy.

How could you be when you screw those first two things up?

By “airy-fairy” they mean “soft,” not serious, especially for grown men.

THEY COULD NOT BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH

It takes guts to delve inside and see the real person under the public personas.

People who choose not to know themselves better often do it because they are pragmatists or hard-nosed “show me the evidence” types. That’s fair enough, but they misunderstand the process.

They think the whole business of self-knowledge and self-love is “airy fairy,” insubstantial and silly.
It will blow away like the dandelion above.
Well, it’s not.

It can be among the most demanding things you do in life.

  • You need to be rigorous and truthful.
  • You will not like everything you discover about yourself.
  • OK, so what?

You know that’s the case already.

KNOW YOURSELF–BE MORE SPECIFIC!
THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT YOURSELF NOW.

  • WHAT DO YOU LIKE?
  • WHAT DO YOU DISLIKE
  • What do you even know about yourself that isn’t a fiction, an old memory or a label?

This way, you’ll become more specific.
You will be able to really identify things about yourself, not superficial things but deep, life-changing things.

  • You will “see” things you like about yourself and things that you don’t.
  • You will discover things about yourself that you never knew until now.
  • You will see problems that need solutions.

That will be multiplied astronomically when you become a detective of yourself.
You can identify a problem and then solve it.

But you can never solve a problem you don’t “see,” that you can’t identify.”

This is the last in a six-part series on why people do not take the time and effort to know them selves.

KNOW YOURSELF

“I’m too old and it’s too late to get to know myself. What good would it do?”

 Uhhh, no.

You already know this isn’t accurate.
When you learn something new about anything you feel better armed, feel good, delighted even. That will be multiplied astronomically when you become a detective of yourself.

You are never too old to learn–look at all these people who get graduate degrees (never mind B.A.s–they’re common)–when they are are over 80 or 90 years old!
(This guy’s probably learning Spanish!)

You must make decisions every day until you go to the big dirt nap. Why not make the best decisions you can with the time you have left?

You could be 20 or 80…it doesn’t matter... Improve your scorecard!

#6 I’m too old and it’s too late.

Uhh, no.
You already know this isn’t accurate. When you learn something new about anything you feel better armed, feel good, delighted even. That will be multiplied  astronomically when you become a detective of yourself.
If you have found a new career late in life…
If you have found someone to love late in life…
If you have found a new interest, a new way of learning, late in life…
Or if you found these or similar things in early stages of life or in mid-life…
Those are all good things.
I have recently  discovered things about animals that astonish me.  
We had dogs when we were growing up: Scamp, Gyp, both mongrels, Cleopatra, an elegant black Irish setter, and others, but aside from playing with them (and running with Cleo) I never really had time to learn much about them

GRACIE THE DOG

Two years ago, my wife got us a dog, a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. We called her Gracie (GRRRacie) after Gracie Fields, the brilliant vaudeville-standup comedy partner of George Burns and because my wife sometimes says things like Gracie  Allen did.
If you remember, (or have seen them on You Tube) Gracie was the foil, the pretend ‘dumb’ partner  who could be never get anything right. Burns would go off on some topic or explain something or offer an opinion and he’d ask her what she thought (or she’d butt in with an opinion). Invariably what she said made no sense at all. Gracie appeared never to “get”; what George  was talking about.
 Here’s an example of Burns and Allen.  
Anyway after watching Gracie and seeing astonishing videos about dogs, and many other animals, I have a new deeper respect for the creatures. That is wisdom I didn’t have before.
I’ve learned something about myself too. A greater awareness of nature, an affection for animals that wasn’t there before I did have respect for them! 
We can all learn more about ourselves in surprising ways and those things we learn help us become more human, more compassionate.
Well, in this case, that’s what I learned.
You learn other things from different experiences.  
If you find learning things about yourself makes you more aware of life around you, more able to “see’ things in a proper (or different)  perspective, let’s talk.

#5 People often fail to really know themselves because they feel know themselves already.

Few people do. We are usually more concerned with helping others and working for others rather than working on ourselves. 
Knowing what food, movies and vacation spots you prefer may seem to prove that you know yourself, but they are only the tip of the iceberg. And you know what happened to the Titanic.
Even what appear to be simple new things we discover can have enormous influence on what we do next.
What would you do if your spouse died? What if you got cancer? If you could live your life over again what would you do differently?
Here’s as exercise.
Write your obituary as if you died today. Make it around 800 words.
Now write it as if you lived to be 85. Write it as you would like it to appear.
If you find any huge difference or wild discrepancy between the two, maybe we should talk about your future.

Lack of Self-Knowledge: Reason #4

#4 People don’t get to know themselves because they think it will take too long.
Well, in truth, it takes the rest of your life, because we humans are much more complicated than computers and getting to know yourself is more complicated than your computer.

(That might not seem right when you are wrestling with the machine!)
But it won’t take up your life. In fact, you learn about yourself every day, all day by simply being aware of the thoughts you have and the decisions you make.
You learn incrementally, almost by osmosis when you know  what to look for and how to look for it.
I can prove that to you in one minute. 
Consider this:
If you have a serious problem in life but you don’t know its cause (so you don’t know how to solve it), the answer lies in self-knowledge.  

If you do not know yourself, three bad things will happen to you.

  •  You will not be in the right line of work.
  •  You will not be with the right person.
  •  You will not be happy. 

The last one follows from the first three. 
You will make wrong decisions in the main areas of life (career and mate selection in particular) and you will continue to make those poor decisions until you die unless and until you again self-knowledge.  
That’s harsh, but it is demonstrably true.
You know this intuitively, I’m just reminding you.

Yes, it takes work, but it is also exciting because it focuses on the most important person on the planet—YOU!

Not in a selfish way, but in a positive, truthful, freeing way.
Here’s a little example.

JOBS, CAREER, WORK

We’re talking jobs here, careers, work. 
Imagine you are back in school. 

Remember those concrete brick classrooms covered with cream or off-white paint? Blackboards covered some of those walls, and there were windows on one side, but usually, the back of the room was entirely concrete brick.
Imagine that classroom was not 30 feet wide but 80. And 12 feet tall. Think of it as a convention hall room. 
Now imagine that each brick had the name of a job painted on it: nurse, sanitation man, doctor, grocery store clerk, lawyer, etc.jobs son bricks 80 feet wide and 12 feet high.
Here’s your task.

HOW DO YOU CHOOSE YOUR LIFE’S WORK?

Grab a piece of chalk.
Go to the front of the room.
Turn your back to the job wall. 
Over your shoulder, throw a piece of chalk at that wall.
Wherever it strikes a brick, that’s your job for life. 
You can’t aim it or have second tries. 
Throw, hit, accept. 
That’s it.
Do you like that idea?
A THROW OF THE DICE OR WORSE?
You don’t know yourself well enough to select a college program or a job that suits your abilities, talents and gifts, so you choose at random. 
Because you do not KNOW your talents, gifts, and abilities. Or you go into a job because your father did it. Or because your friends are going into it. Or because it’s the ‘next big thing’. Or because it’s trendy.​​  

​BECAUSE YOU DON’T KNOW ANY BETTER?

How will you feel fifty years on if you do that

How do  you feel now, if that’s what you did?
Right. 
Not good.
 
There are circumstances that prevent us from doing what we were meant to do. Or even trained to do.
That’s life. 
Think of the immigrants who were professionals in their home countries– they’re from Syria now, but others have been coming here for two hundred years or more–who faced the same circumstances.
They are Immigrants as many of us (or our parents or grandparents) once were who come to Canada, the U.S., or Britain and find that because they don’t speak English and don’t have the requisite background, education or credentials they are at a huge disadvantage.
Even if they if they have the credentials in their home countries, those are not accepted here. Ever. Or not without more training and developed language skills. 
They are often too old for that and besides they have to get a job, support their families, educate their children and hope the kids will make it. Eventually.
​ 
They don’t have a choice. That choice was taken from them by war or some other catastrophe.

​YOU HAVE A CHOICE, BUT IT REQUIRES SELF-EXAMINATION

We just have to understand that there IS a choice, and we need the information to make it responsibly, carefully and successfully. 
It isn’t difficult to “get” it if we know the consequences of NOT getting it.

Most people are reluctant to go on an interior journey of the “self.” They offer one or more of six objections. I’ll write about them for the next week.

Knowing yourself will make whatever problem there is (if there is one) more specific, more  accessible. You’ll ‘be able to identify the  problem and then solve it.
You can never solve a problem you don’t “see” or can’t identify.
