Suicide, Robin Williams and your self.
Robin Williams commited suicide. Aside from the sadness and shock you may feel, what does his death have to do with you?
Maybe nothing more than being made to think of the last person you know who killed himself.
Maybe a closer look at your friends and family and your self. Because this has to do with the self, make no mistake. Robin Williams could no longer live with himself or his depression or in the world.
This despite, fame, fortune, children he loved, a wife who loved him.
How are you doing?
“DIED SUDDENLY”
“Died suddenly” is the newspaper code for suicide. We’re hearing that often. This week it was “asphixiation” as if Robin Willams accidentally fell asleep in a garage with a carbon monoxide leak.
We see it often and we shake our heads. “Too bad, so sad.”People were talking about reaching out yesterday but in many places saying something to a third party (a teacher, parent, employer or friend) about a suspected problem with a person is considered an invasion of privacy. Remember the University of Virginia murderous student, as one example?
So we do nothing. And it happens repeatedly.
In this case, Mr Williams knew of the problem and had sought treatment. It didn’t help ultimately because depression and anxiety are exacerbated by drug and alcohol addiction. Even though he might have been ‘clean” for years, the essential damage was done.
The past is not over. It is not even past
–William Faulkner
Which comes first, depression or addiction? It varies, but it is a deadly combination.
We have to learn to take care of each other better.
Stop the stupid political correctness and help each other. Life is more than toys, games, cars, money and celebrity. And then it’s gone.
In my own small town, just outside Toronto, we have had three suicides in a couple of months. Those are the ones we’ve heard of.
You can bet there were more.
HOW ARE YOU?
I am not a psychologist or psychiatrist, just a coach, but I do know about the self and this has everything to do with the self.
