People who are disillusioned with life ask, Is that all there is?
No, but you have to dig to get more.
HOW WOULD WE SPEND LIFE IF WE KNEW OURSELVES BETTER?
IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO DO THAT.
IS THAT ALL THERE IS?
That line became familiar from the Leiber and Stoller song, Is that all there is? sung by Peggy Lee in 1969.
You can watch her sing it HERE.
Do you sometimes ask yourself, Is that all there is?
The lyrics of this song are written from the point of view of a person who is disillusioned with events in life that are supposedly unique experiences.
The singer tells of witnessing her family’s house on fire when she was a little girl, seeing the circus, and falling in love for the first time.
After each memory she expresses her disappointment in the experience. She suggests that we “break out the booze and have a ball – if that’s all there is”, instead of worrying about life.
She explains that she’ll never kill herself because she knows that death will be a disappointment as well.
YIKES!
THE SOPRANOS’ DAVID CHASE AND THE QUESTION
The Sopranos’ creator, David Chase, was interviewed about the ambiguous ending of his TV series.
He got philosophical about it.
“I think death very seldom comes to people the way the think it’s going to. And the spiritual question would be: “Is that all there is?”
Which is the question we all have to ask ourselves.
Well, all right, we DON’T have to ask it but not asking results in a complete waste of our lives.
How is it going?
